Can You Meditate Lying Down?

Can you meditate lying down?

Yes; most certainly you can!

Some of the deepest kinds of meditation are often achieved while meditating lying down.

However, it can be fairly difficult to concentrate and sustain that concentration while lying down. It’s easy to wander away in thought or to fall asleep if you meditate while lying down. So, you need certain practices and processes mastered before you can meditate while lying down.

Now, the most important thing that you must understand here is –

What is meditation?

Stripped off all the hype about meditation, it’s simply being aware of your inner and outer worlds. It’s all about becoming mindful of who you are, your life processes, mental processes, and energy processes

Meditation is simply looking at your existence that is mostly within you.

You can do it in whatever posture you want.

You can do it sitting on a mat or a chair, you can meditate lying down, and you can even meditate while walking or running.

Another crucial aspect of all these questions about can you meditate lying down or can you meditate while walking comes down to another critical question-

How adept are you at meditating?

How adept and habituated you are at silencing your mental chatter and clutter. It is the first prerequisite of doing meditation.

Once you gain the ability to control your mind any time you want, you can meditate in whatever position or situation you are in.

The mind is the most agile and unstable substance in the world. It’s now here, and a very microsecond later, there!

Having a grip over your mind is one of the most difficult tasks in the world.

So, when you start meditating as a beginner, you can find it difficult to silence your mind.

At this stage, it’s most beneficial to sit in a Lotus Position

You don’t have to recreate the exact posture. It’s fairly difficult to sit like that.

You just have to customize the posture that fits you and feels the most comfortable to you.

Lotus posture, along with a silent, distraction-free environment, is most conducive to meditation for beginners. It will enable the most amount of concentration to build the habits of mind control.

Gradually, when the habit solidifies, and you become a master of your mind, you can silence and get your mind ready for deeper meditations any time you want and in any position you want.

One of the great ways of practicing meditation lying down could be in the sauna. Read all about sauna meditation here.
