Is It Normal to Cry During Meditation?

It’s perfectly normal to cry during meditation. It’s even sublimely therapeutic most of the time.

During meditation, your mind finds it safe to wander into various corners of your being. As a result, it is natural that many negative emotions and memories may pop up at different times. These memories and emotions can even result in crying during meditation.

There’s nothing to fear at all. Through crying while meditating, you are actually working out some of the unresolved issues hidden deep within your psyche.

So, whenever such overflowing emotions surge through you during meditation, and you feel like crying, do not obstruct the flow of those feelings.

Let the emotions and tears flow gracefully. Let all the pent-up negative energy free up the space. After the meditation session, you will feel much freer and alive.

It’s not only negativity that may cause the crying while meditating. Sometimes, a deeper sense of bliss and joy can also make our tears flow from within. More on this in the next FAQ.

Both of these reasons for crying meditation are perfectly normal and, most of the time, have therapeutic benefits.

As mentioned earlier, our minds find it safer to probe deeply into various aspects and recesses of our being during meditation. So, it can naturally bring out some of the regressed or hidden memories and emotions out to our awareness. As a result, crying during meditation can occur.

These kinds of revelatory experiences during meditation also help us work through those hidden or subconscious negativity. It can free us from many forms of negative effects of subconscious trauma elements.

On the other hand, if you end up crying during meditation for no apparent reasons, it’s most likely that you are experiencing a deep sense of gratitude and peace within you.

Often during the early stages of experiencing meditative peace and relaxation, it’s natural to be overwhelmed and start crying. After years of suffering, anxiety, and tension, when the mind finally lacks negativity and feels peace, it can let out tears of joy.

The bliss and joy you experience during meditation fill you with a deep sense of gratitude. You start to feel and realize how immensely the universe and God love you. This sense of being loved by universal forces can also trigger tears of joy.

What to Do If I Cry During Meditation?

The bottom line is if you feel like crying or start crying during meditation, remember that it’s perfectly normal and a kind of a spiritual experience of sorts.

You should not try to obstruct the flow of emotions and feelings in such situations and let your inner emotions flow unabashed.

However, it should also be noted that crying while meditating occurs mostly during early months and years of meditative practices. Also, you are likely to experience such incidents of crying meditation rarely and far between.

And, as you gradually work out all the deep emotional turbulence via meditation and become an experienced meditator, the inner peace, joy, and gratitude will become a natural and usual experience for you. Then, you will no longer experience crying during meditation.

On another note, it should also be mentioned that the crying can start suddenly without any prior indication. And, many times, the reason may not always be apparent.

It would also help to not dwell too much on finding the specific emotional issue or reason that made you cry if it’s not apparently visible. Gradually, as you keep practising meditation, your deeper emotional dynamics will automatically reveal themselves to you.

If you get to know the reasons behind your crying during meditation, that’s nice. But if you don’t find it, even then, the therapeutic effects will be the same nonetheless.
